Thank you all Jeeves Fans, and the BBC!

Well, it looks like we're now being covered by the BBC. I've placed a link to the article on this page, and want to thank the people who have commented thus far for their enthusiasm and eloquence. Please keep it up, I expect some US papers will be covering us soon enough.

I'm still trying to sift through all the wonderful comments, but there are getting to be so many and there are so many outstanding observations I'm both overwhelmed and moved at the creativity of you, the everyday users. I'll try to keep up as best as I can, but the most important thing is to keep spreading the word, send out emails, tell your friends, send messages to Jeeves and IAC company sites, post on newsgroups and blogs, wherever you can, until the company leadership gets the message.

Also, my sincere apologies to our UK friends, but we yanks do use an alternate (if somewhat cruder) form of the english language, and to us -- the Jeeves character is a butler. (In fact, here a valet is a person who parks cars for a living). But if valet is the term and spirit in which he was created, I'm okay with that as well, and I stand corrected. I hope this publicity and his continued usage on the Ask Jeeves site as the internet's MOST recognizable face brings many more young readers to discover the joys of PG Wodehouse.

Save Jeeves please! We use Ask all the time and it would be a crime to remove the one thing that attracted us in the first place. Yet another example of big business riding roughshod over companies they take over.

The easy answer if they do get rid of him is to use another search engine. Remember - we have the power at the end of the day.

NOOOO! They can't take my Jeeves away from me! I rely upon him to find my information without having to ask precise questions, unlike Google and Yahoo.
I also appreciate him because the first 5 sites that come up in the inquiry are NOT porn sites, again unlike Google and Yahoo.
Besides, I like his little outfits. 'Specially the pirate outfit of Sept. 17th!
(I found this blog because I was on the BBC World News site)

Forget about Jeeves. Save yourself!

Get help before you harm yourself, someone you love, or some innocent butler caught up in your odd charade.

Please, please, please don't drop the Jeeves character. Without this friendly welcoming face your website will be just as bland as Google.

Well!!Jeeves what is it......just a Butler!! But there is something huge about it that those industry giants feel some threat from it and want to use their powers to remove it.
Tell you the truth,i was very fond of Google before i came to know about askjeeves. When i fisrt visited site i liked it ..Why?! well...only cause of having seen someone right there, ready to help me....it provided me with the satisfaction that some one is with me...to help me out....
Please! Don't take that sense of companionship from us!!!

Yes Anonymous(and anyone else)
There is help out there.
It's called Answerpool which used to be attached to Jeeves (ask.com) under the Banner of Answerpoint until early 2002 when the management decided that due to technical problems they were going to close the "Human searchengine" down (you read that right) We would answer questions posed by surfers and we did rather well.We picked up about 5000(guess?) members. All found the site via a small link on Ask.coms Home page titled "Ask other people"
Thus they found the "secret garden" of the Answerpoint community
I only got into answering by spotting an unanswered question which I knew the answer to and replied to it and got thanked in return (never was a great scholar at school) I looked around for others to answer and I slowly but surely gained an Enthusiast Badge
Also I learnt more about how the Internet worked (was very green)
And became quite proficient at giving advice about Netiquette and some other subjects, and when Answerpoint closed, I was the League leader on Several lists and I was rated a Bronze Enthusiast(not bad for about a years work from A Newbie to the Internet?)

OK Answerpoint had closed there were 5000 people with nothing to answer...
There were several abortive attempts to make Answerpoint MK2s but they all bar 1 failed
Then out of the blue I recieved an Email telling of a New Answerboard called www.answerpool.com being started (by a fledgling webmaster)And all the heaviest posters of the Answerpoint site were being invited to participate
"Ah well" I says, "Give it a few weeks and it'll go POP"!
There were about 200 of us all posting question answers in what has become our chatty way of doing things to make the site look busy for a few weeks until visitors started coming in.
And it surprised us by keeping going Membership is approaching 5000 members It has spawned some other sites such as www.discussionpool.com which was the original discussion forum attached to AP (as we call it) and thats doing nicely as well thank you :-)
What about Me? I am now a Diamond Grade Enthusiast(highest possible) with about 8500 posts ,I was Enthusiast of the Month in Computers(Internet questions)
I answer on several other forums as well. Have in total about 11,000 posts.
Stop by and look in at what we are doing(No obligation) We like challenges ( We have many people from all over the World ready to give you an answer and we do it for free unlike forums Like Google answers.

I have made many good contacts on this site.It really has become a genuine community site as well. Who needs sites like the ICQ and Yahoo forums for asking questions when Answerpool does a better job?

Bottom Line...
Jeeves started myself (and others) out on our "Job" as Answerers and we are grateful to Him for that,Lets hope he remains in some form or another otherwise people will turn away from a "Jeevesless" Ask.com in their droves
It's the Character that makes the site,I should Know I collect searchengines.LOL
Lots of which have good ideas and no Character to Promote the site.

Just save Jeeves!!!!!

He is imortal in the books and our hearts but don't remove the visible presence on the internet!!!!

Sorry, but ASK isn't our company. We don't own it, so we really have no say in what they eventually decided to do with it. I like the mascot, but, like the "New Coke" campaigns here in the US a few years ago, all we consumers can do is vote, in this case with our computers, not to use the site if they lose our Beloved Butler.

Hi. I agree with your sentiments, but why isn't there a petition to sign so the Jeeves bosses can see the number of users who will be going elsewhere?

You've been quiet for a long time now. What happened to you?? I tried searching for information on your disappearance, but unfortunately I used Ask.com, so I didn't get any good results. :( Take care!

Wondered what happened to Jeeves. The Ask.com link either just doesn't do anything - or gives inappropriate links.

It just isn't the same without Jeeves. I'm from the UK and always thought that Jeeves was a butler. What's wrong with that?

PLEASE BRING JEEVES BACK. ASK.COM LOOKS PRETTY STUPID. YOU CANNOT REPLACE ASK JEEVES WITH ASK.COM

Actually, Jeeves is Wodehouse, which I suppose is not an original conclusion. He serves to present the run-o'-the-mill tales in another light simply by Wodehouse creating himself in the guise of a character whose timely solutions could also be elaborated upon without the presence of Jeeves as a literary exercise, which most of the delightful Wodehouse works are.

The real truth re: Jeeves. I got this from an industry insider that was beside himself with anger.
(due to space restrictions here is the readers disgest version)
The gentleman/artist that created the Jeeves character passed away. His widow was collecting royalties from the site because of thier use of the artwork. His partner resented this, and when the contract expired, he didn't renew it. leaving his partner's widow out in the cold. there is a petition going around, to renew the contract, and asking the persons who sign it to boycott ask.com until they bring jeeves back. after seeing the the ask.com site, I was happy to sign and boycott.

OK, Ask Jeeves AnswerPoint shut down a long time ago, and there's a very small group of people that like to say that they are the continuation of Jeeves. They call themselves AnswerPool.

This is a mediocre group to say the least. Very few of the most knowledgeable people actually stuck around after Jeeves closed. What you'll find at AnswerPool are very opinionated and often unresearched answers. Ask for clarification on the answer and they'll often take offence.

AnswerPool.com is comprised of the group of people that Jeeves actually wanted to weed out before they closed.

I don't recommend Answerpool at all. There are many more sophisticated sites out there where you can get more reliable answers with sources named.

I miss the Jeeves character and hope it will be returned to the "ask.com" site. It was always fun to see it in different costumes according to holidays and seasons. Everything else in the computer world is so efficient as to be impersonal. Please return Jeeves!!!

Deer Jeeves - seems to me you have contact all over the world with butlers!

I am running a recruitment company in South Africa and one of my clients are in urgent need of a Valet Butler. They are in the process of relocating to Mauritius. They bought shares in a very exclusive plastic surgical medical centre with villas where clients recover afterwards.

We need someone who is an expert in fabrics (the cleaning of designer clothes) and someone who can manage staff as well. This person will work for 12 months at the most at my client’s home in Waterkloof, Pretoria (very upmarket area) and will relocate with them to Mauritius to handle butler and management duties at the villas.

We would appreciate your assistance greatly if you know of anyone interested to put them in contact with me.

I agree with the PG Wodehouse comme t,.. that is a great hilarious BBC series as well and I am making you all watch it every sunday on dvd or video.. Does it get any better than the actor Stephen Fry as Jeeves?

Good point, also , that Jeeves didnt require full-on sentences to provide the info. Jeeves was so popular, in fact, that ask jeeves was broadcast on WTAM 1100 AM , a station which is a true powerhouse and heard in about 38 states and half of Canada! When the host had a question on air, the cohost quickly said 'go to ask jeeves', typed it in and got an answer which was announced live on air. LONG LIVE JEEVES!!!!!!!!

Jeeves is actually derived from an abbreviation of 'Gentlemen's
valet, although where they got a 'J' when it should really be spelled 'Geeves' is beyond me, but it explains where I got my weird word pronunciations from. I learned this after watching Jeeves and Wooster, a very funny comedy show. And of course ALL men are capable of being gentlemen; it is more a matter of manners than station in life. Of course, you could have found all this lovely information if we still had our beloved Jeeves and didn't have to 'ask' what Jeeves stands for at 'Ask'.com. Ha ha.
